CACDA Held Nuclear Security Meeting

On 25 February, 2014, CACDA and Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) co-organized a meeting on nuclear security in Beijing.  CACDA Vice President General Qian Lihua made the opening remarks,  CACDA Secretary-General Chen Kai presided over the meeting. More than 40 participants from relevant organization and media attended the meeting, including representatives from Department of National Defense, China Academy of Social Sciences, China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament, China Institute of Atomic Energy, State Nuclear Security Technology Center, China Academy for Engineering Physics, Peking University, Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, the Global Times, etc. 

NTI Executive Vice President Deborah Rosenblum and Vice President on Nuclear Material Security Page Stoutland introduced the NTI latest version of Nuclear Materials Security Index released in this January. They discussed with the Chinese scholars on how to enhance the security of nuclear materials, combat nuclear smuggling and the future of Nuclear Security Summit. The Chinese experts also raised their concerns about the nuclear security issues of Japan.

The 2014 Nuclear Materials Security Index is the second version of the first-of-its-kind public bench-marking project of nuclear security conditions on a country-by-country basis in 176 countries. Initially launched in 2012, the NTI Index, prepared with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), has sparked international discussions about priorities required to strengthen security and most important, is encouraging governments to provide assurances and take actions to reduce risks.
