On 29 January, 2018, CACDA met with a delegation of CTBTO led by Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission in Beijing. The meeting was chaired by CACDA Senior Adviser Ambassador Li Changhe and joined with Ambassador Shi Zhongjun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, and Dong Zhihua, Deputy Director General of the Arms Control Department of MFA. More than 40 experts from China Academy for Engineering Physics, China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Peking University, Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy and National University of Defense Technology had a discussion with the delegation on the current status and challenges of the CTBT. They agreed that CTBT was an important pillar of international nuclear disarmament, whose role cannot be replaced or questioned. Under the increasingly severe international security situation, the international community should, in particular, maintain the authority and universality of the treaty, continue to advance the preparatory work for the implementation of the treaty, and consolidate and expand the international consensus on the nuclear test ban.
The main purpose of the delegation’s visit to China is to attend the joint ceremony for certification of China-hosted nuclear activity monitoring stations. Prior to the event, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Lassina Zerbo in Beijing.
