Following the P5 (five NPT-recognized nuclear weapon states) formal conference held in Beijing, China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA) hosted a public event themed “Safeguarding NPT regime: shared responsibility and joint efforts” as the inter-session of the P5 Beijing conference on January 31, 2019. More than 80 participants attended the event, including the P5 official delegations, NGO representatives, think tank experts, scholars, diplomats from the local embassies and media. CACDA Vice President & Secretary-General Yang Yi chaired the meeting.

The Director-General of Arms Control Department of Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ambassador Fu Cong, together with the other P5 delegation principals expressed their views and national policies on how to implement the NPT obligation and promote nuclear disarmament. They called for the global community maintaining the NPT as the cornerstone of the international non-proliferation regime by more effective exchange and coordination among the states parties. Civil Society representatives from P5 countries shared their thoughts on how to promote and strengthen NPT regime. During the interaction session, the audience have a frank and in-depth discussions on the issues of how to strengthen the effectiveness, universality and authority of NPT, how to enhance the cooperation of the P5, etc. The conference had enhanced mutual understanding among governments, civil society, academia, and media on important international security issues.
