10 December 2012 - On 10 December 2012, Saferworld, in cooperation with CACDA, organised a roundtable discussion in Beijing to introduce the EU-China-Africa project on conventional arms. Officials from the Embassies to China of UK, USA, Russian Federation and EU , academics and experts from Chinese think thanks including the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), China Institute for International Strategic Studies(CIISS), Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD) and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) attended the event. A Chinese and a UK academic, from St Andrew’s University, gave an overview of China-EU engagement on peace and security issues in Africa, followed by Saferworld’s presentation on the trilateral project. Both sides exchanged their opinions on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) negotiations and actions to combat the illicit trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). Discussions stressed the importance of strengthening EU-China cooperation in peace and security building in Africa through action at the practical level.
