On November 9, 2023, the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association and the Library of Tsinghua University jointly held a seminar on the promotion of arms control books and materials. Zhang Yan, president of CACDA, and Jiang Yunzhong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University Library attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Wei Chengguang, Assistant curator of the Library of Tsinghua University, presided over the meeting. Li Chijiang, Secretary General of CACDA, and He Yu, Deputy Director of the Special Collections Department of the Library of Tsinghua University attended the meeting. More than 50 experts and scholars from the Academy of Military Sciences, China Institute of International Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, China Academy of Engineering Physics, China Institute of Nuclear Industry Strategy, Chinese Academy of Governance, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University and other institutions attended the conference.

In his speech, President Zhang Yan expressed that China’s arms control diplomacy has played an irreplaceable role in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development, contributing to maintaining international peace and global strategic stability with China’s wisdom and strength. For a long time, China’s efforts in arms control have yielded fruitful results and a mass of outstanding diplomats and experts have emerged. Qian Jiadong, Lin Guojiong and Zou Yunhua, three of the most outstanding talents, have made great contributions to China’s arms control diplomacy. Zhang hoped that the scholars could pass on the spirit of the talents in the arms control field who are willing to dedicate and dare to struggle from generation to generation.

Secretary Jiang Yunzhong introduced the collecting process and digitalization of the “Arms control” special collection, saying that this batch of special documents is not only a tool for teaching and researching of the universities but also shoulders the mission of serving society. The library always welcomes scholars in the field of arms control to take advantage of the collections of Tsinghua Library to carry out relevant research, and hopes that with the support of experts attending this meeting, the arms control special collection could be improved and completed.

During the meeting, Director Wu Jinhuai, Associate Professor Han Hua and Research Fellow Zhai Yucheng respectively introduced the events of Ambassador Qian Jiadong, Dr. Lin Guojiong and Ms. Zou Yunhua, the donors of arms control books and materials, and reviewed the contributions made by these three donors to the cause of arms control and the reference value of the materials. The participants visited the arms control resource room in the Library and had in-depth exchanges on the use of arms control materials.

In the end, Ambassador Zhang Yan and Secretary Jiang Yunzhong made concluding remarks to the meeting. Ambassador Zhang Yan highly praised the significance of the arms control books and materials in the library. He said that arms control and disarmament have already become an important part of diplomacy in current complex international situation. He hoped that the Library of Tsinghua University would continue to focus on this work in the future, make proper use of the existing resources and provide more literature resources on the issue of arms control and disarmament for China. Jiang Yunzhong said that the Library of Tsinghua University will work harder to provide more convenient services, from the protection of paper resources to the acceleration of the thematic website building and the utilization of electronic resources. Jiang also hoped to jointly work with experts to expand the special collection, further enrich the collection, as well as extend foreign exchanges. (军控协会)
